    So instead of spending about 20 bucks on a jig to drill angles, how much do I need to spend on a band saw to slice a section of wood in half and make my own jig? I get the "simplicity"....but this is impossible unless you have machines in the first place...

    The laminate-hole design is a vast improvement over all the other honking, overweight DIY sleds on RUclips. It also makes me wonder if the sled can go thinner by using aluminum u-channel for the runners and additional cross members... or maybe embed t-track in the top surface for hold down clamps.

    Great design. Three suggestions. 1. Cut the saw blade slot with a 1/4” dado and then lower the blade and insert a piece of 12” key stock into the slot leaving it proud. Then use your square to square up the fence on the sled using the 2 screw method. This helps to eliminate any deviations that may occur using the blade as a reference. I have found the key stock to be very straight with inserted into the slot. Then take the key stock out and glue a piece of 1/4” thick hardwood into the slot flat with the surface of the sled. Then use your working saw blade to cut a new zero clearance slot. Then when it gets wider through use you can go back and use your 1/4” dado to clear out the insert and glue another in place. 2. Using hardwood for the runners, make them loose fitting for the slot. After putting the coins in the slots wedge the runners in the slots. I wedge them to the outside of the saw. Then I glue and screw them in place. This will cut down on friction drag on the runners. If your slots are imperfect then move them to the inside. I make sure I either put both runners to the outside or to the inside, this eliminates the runners from wiggling in the slots. Then of course wax the runners. 3. Instead of cutting so many holes to lighten the weight, you could cut a numbers of slots between fewer holes.

    Sorry I like how light the sled is. But you don't use a framing square to adjust your fence on a sled. You would use the 5 - cut method to square it up your fence. And should have used metal t-track's for your runners as the wood will expand & shrink.

  • @Error42_

    Not accurate, which is not surprising given that he used a carpenter’s square to align the fence, instead of the 5 cut method of William Ng. I don’t think any cabinet maker would accept this as accurate enough. I certainly wouldn’t. He mentions .033 over 15”. My sled is more like .003” over 15” if that. So if you need precision, this is not the design for you. If you want your cuts to be approximately square, then go for it.

    Very nice and great video. Have you tried using super glue instead of epoxy for quicker drying times with the spray to set it off. Where the saw come through at the end you add a L shaped clear acrylic bit to cover it and limit the risk even more possibly just a thought. On another note could you if you wanted drill some of the holes through the laminate for a bit less weight. You could wax the underside and table as it might make it slide better with a machine wax.

  • @scottwilson5356
    @scottwilson5356 Год назад

    Very cool design. Personally I’d build a guard for your fingers. That just looks dangerous to me but I also use a SawStop saw so I’m paranoid to begin with. I like the way you drilled out the holes and then covered them with laminate to make it lighter, kind of like an interior door is made. I do agree that it would be good to have a couple of hold downs so you don’t have to have your fingers near that blade or let the piece you cutting free float and possibly float up as it goes across the blade. I like your design of the edges. I’m in the process of making a new on right now because I downsized my table saw and my old sled was made from particle board with a 6” high 1.5” plywood fence. It was big enough to hold a cabinet door which is what I used it for primarily. You’ve given me some good ideas and thanks for sharing.

    Nice build, but far too many pieces glued together. Rain, snow, sleet & ice all Winter long will quickly cause parts to move about. The fewer glued up joints in bird houses & feeders, the better. Plus, the feed hopper is just too large. A squirrel family or bear or raccoon can get up there & easily scatter 5-10 lbs of seed. It’s a nice feeder, and good wood working, but not a good feeder.
